Musée McCord 3D The McCord 3D project (also titled Air, Land, and Sea: A Story About Exploration) is a project I led as a VMC Lab initiative. This was a research initiative that included many partners - the McCord Museum, the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), the Canadian Museum of Nature, Symbioz, and the Canadian Space Agency. It was a project I led from concept through design and implementation. The goals of this project were: to investigate the usability of 3D onsite through gesture-based manipulation & navigation versus online mouse directed maniuplation, and to compare the online version using 3D modeling and a 3D environment to the Joe Fafard project which used pseudo 3D (photosticthing and panoramic walkthroughts) to see which technological approach was most efficient, cost effective, and usable. The overall potential of digitizing in 3D was to provide up-close access to objects and artefacts that would be otherwise impossible to share with visistors on so intimate a level. Usability tests were conducted by the NRC and results were shared with the museum community via CHIN's professional exchange. The project sits in-gallery at the McCord Museum and was proven to be so successful with visitors that they produced a 2nd experience based on the same approach. |
